Why Does Dust Keep Falling From My Ceiling?

Dust falls when it has built up on overhead surfaces such as fan blades, duct tops, beams, joists and diffusers and is disturbed by airflow, vibration or a fan starting. The fix is to remove the accumulated dust with source-capture cleaning and keep a regular schedule.

Common sources

  • Ceiling fans starting up
  • HVAC cycling on and blowing across dusty duct tops
  • Doors and vibration in open-ceiling buildings
  • Dusty diffusers

Frequently asked questions

Is falling dust a sign of an HVAC problem?

Sometimes. If dust blows out of diffusers right after cleaning, have an HVAC contractor check filters and ducts.
