Why Do Ceiling Vents Turn Black?

Ceiling vents turn black because fine dust, soot and cooking particles in moving air deposit on the diffuser and the ceiling where the air stream hits it. The dark ring, called smudging, can usually be cleaned from the diffuser and most ceiling surfaces with source capture and surface-appropriate cleaners.

Common causes

  • Cooking particles and grease
  • Candle and fireplace soot
  • Construction dust
  • Dirty or bypassed filters

Frequently asked questions

Can the black ring come back?

Yes, over time. Regular cleaning and good filtration slow it down.
