Why it matters
Linear diffusers are chosen for clean architectural lines, so dust streaks on them stand out immediately in high-end spaces.
Their narrow openings are hard to clean with general janitorial tools, so they are often skipped for years.
Cleaning the streak on the adjacent ceiling restores the finished look designers intended.
How AELC providers clean linear slot diffusers
Every AELC Network Provider follows the AELC Source-Control Method: do not move the contamination; capture it or contain it. For linear slot diffusers, that means:
- Identify. Measure total linear feet of slot diffusers and returns, and note drywall versus tile ceilings.
- Capture. Vacuum each slot with a narrow crevice or slot tool on a HEPA source-capture vacuum.
- Contain. Run thin damp microfiber or a slot brush through the opening to lift fine film.
- Clean. Clean ceiling streaking with a surface-appropriate cleaner, testing on painted drywall first.
- Verify. Check the full run under raking light and photograph results.
Typical reach class: Standard Reach. About AELC reach classes.
How often should linear slot diffusers be cleaned?
| Setting | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|
| Corporate offices and lobbies | Every 6 months |
| Retail and hospitality | Every 3 to 6 months |
Grease, lint, humidity and how visible the area is can shorten these intervals. See how often high dusting should be done.
How much does linear slot diffuser cleaning cost?
Typical range: $2–$5 per linear foot (per linear foot). Heavier streaking on painted surfaces takes more time. Pricing usually includes matching linear returns.
Prices are set by each independent provider. Ranges reflect published market data and AELC time standards. See the full above-eye-level cleaning cost guide.
DIY vs. hiring a pro
- Light vacuuming with a crevice tool between visits keeps streaking from building up.
- Avoid abrasive pads on painted drywall.
Safety and when to stop
- Do not force tools into slots with pattern controllers; they can be dislodged.
- Escalate any water staining to facility maintenance.

Industries that need it
Linear Slot Diffuser Cleaning: frequently asked questions
What causes dark streaks beside linear diffusers?
Fine particles carried by the air stream deposit on the ceiling where the air flows along it. The effect is called smudging and is cleaned with surface-appropriate methods.
Can streaks on painted drywall always be removed?
Light to moderate streaking usually cleans off. Long-term staining on flat paint may need touch-up painting, which is outside AELC scope.
How are linear diffusers priced?
By the linear foot, because slot length, not the number of diffusers, drives the time required.
